Program Summary

Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association's  Marginal Area Rehabilitation in Saskatchewan (MARS) Program aims to convert unprofitable cropland into perennial forage. Landowners can receive $100/acre on eligible land which they seed down and maintain as forage for 10 years.

Conservation Goals

This program encourages the conversion of marginal cropland into perennial forage to increase pollinator habitat and biodiversity, and improve soil health.

Eligible Lands

Eligible landscapes include marginal cropland. Eligible land should be within the coloured area shown on the map - https://sasksoil.ca/mars

Additional Details

  • Applicant properties must fall within the target area

  • 40 acres maximum per quarter section (160ac) will be eligible, the rest must remain as cropland.

  • Receipts for the forage seed must be provided and DU will come out to do an establishment check in the summer.

Commitment

Land must be maintained as forage for 10 years. Should you wish to break the land within 10 years, you can repay a portion of the total funds provided in proportion to the number of years remaining in the term of the agreement.

Incentive

Participants will receive $100/acre on eligible land. A rebate of $100 per 50lb bag of Proven Seed Perennial Forages purchased through Nutrien AgSolutions is available.

Important to Know

  • Crop insurance is recommended.

  • Free Pollinator Pak(s) will may be available.

  • Seed rebates are based on full retail price; discounts may be deducted.

  • This incentive may be stacked with the FCC rebate program if you are an FCC client.
