Grass Banking

Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation and SODCAP

Program Summary

The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA), Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation, and the South of the Divide Conservation Action Program (SODCAP ) have secured funding to establish Grass-Banking projects in southwest Saskatchewan. Ranchers will have access to grazing in Grasslands National Park at reduced fees if they agree to adopt grazing methods on both private and park land to protect species such as the Sprague's Pipit, Greater Sage-Grouse, and Chestnut-Collared Longspur, habitats will be managed using varied grazing methods.

Conservation Goals

This program aims to provide holistic conservation across both the home property and the grassbank by ensuring grazing management supports wildlife habitat.

Commitment

The landowner signs a voluntary agreement with SODCAP which includes a commitment to adopt certain management and grazing practices on both the rancher's home property and the grazing acres in Grasslands National Park.

Incentive

Ranchers participating in the programs would receive access to grazing opportunities in Grasslands National Park at a reduced rate.

Important to Know

The program is in its initial stages and no grassbanks have as yet been established.

The program is financially supported by the Government of Canada, and being delivered in partnership between Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association and their Foundation, the South of the Divide Conservation Action Program (SODCAP), and Grasslands National Park.
