Program Summary
Conservation Easements with DUC Saskatchewan are legal tools that restrict some land uses while allowing others. The landowner maintains ownership of the land, while making a commitment to conserve its natural areas. DUC Saskatchewan easements pay approximately 35% of current land values. They are compatible with grazing, haying and other low-impact land uses.

Conservation Goals
Conservation easements focus on preserving the natural habitat on parcels in perpetuity.
Eligible Lands
Eligible landscapes include uncultivated lands with natural wetland or upland habitat in DUC Saskatchewan's Program Delivery Areas (see https://ag.ducks.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/CE-FLYER.pdf)
Additional Details
Clearing, breaking and draining of the areas protected by the agreement are not permitted
These voluntary legal agreements transfer with title, ensuring the land you care about remains in its current condition for future generations to enjoy.
Maintain sole discretion over land management outside of the values protected by the agreement
The landowner maintains control of any and all public access to the property.
The conservation easement will be tied to land title and will apply to all future landowners
Commitment
Landowners sign an agreement committing in perpetuity to not clear, break, or drain the conservation easement area, and ensure all conservation easement areas are maintained according to the agreed-upon terms and conditions.
Incentive
Landowners receive a one-time payment equal to approximately 35% of the current land value.

Important to Know
A sketch plan or map outlining the area of the conservation easement and a baseline report describing the land features affected by the conservation easement will be attached to the agreement
The landowner retains all rights and privileges not specified in the conservation easement agreement and is responsible for all taxes and obligations associated with ownership.
A conservation easement agreement may be amended by mutual consent of both parties. In the event that a dispute arises between the parties, they may refer the matter to arbitration pursuant to provincial legislation.
