DUC's Rangeland Program provides a per-quarter section payment to Manitoba landowners willing to improve and protect eligible rangeland for 10 years.

Conservation Goals

Rangeland that is kept as uncultivated grassland retains wildlife habitat, soil health and stabilization, flood protection, and groundwater recharge capability.

Eligible Lands

Eligible landscapes include rangelands in Manitoba. Lands within DUC's provincial Target Areas (see links below for map) are eligible for a maximum of $10,000 per year per landowner; lands outside Target Areas have a $5000 maximum per project.

Additional Details

Grasslands cannot be broken and wetlands cannot be drained for 10 years.

Agreement is pro-rated, allowing for early exit.

A Grazing Management Plan is included, with advice on enhancing pasture productivity.

Commitment

Landowners sign a 10-year agreement to adopt a grazing management plan and refrain from breaking or draining areas protected by the agreement. The agreement has a pro-rated buyout option.

Incentive

Producers can receive up to $5,000 per quarter section to improve pasturelands.

Important to Know

  • Nothing is tied to land title and no carbon credits are claimed under the agreement.

  • DUC will provide personalized support to optimize grassland productivity through infrastructure incentives and a grazing management plan.

  • DUC will create maps for the producer outlining the proposed activities and design, including paddocks, water systems, temporary fencing, rotation options and other elements.

  • A maximum of $10,000 per year per landowner for lands that fall within DUC Target Areas OR $5000 per project for lands that fall outside of DUC Target Areas (see map on reverse side).

  • Eligible on rented lands with landowner permission.

  • Eligible on lands with existing DUC agreements but payments may vary.
